DEI: The Heart of McCownGordon Culture

Willy leads the Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts at McCownGordon

From the very beginning, McCownGordon Construction dedicated itself to the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in our workplace. We understand and embrace the value brought by our associates’ different ideas, perspectives and experiences. At McCownGordon Construction, we live and breathe diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). By fostering and embracing different ideas, perspectives and experiences with our associates we instill a sense of belonging that leads to success.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are intimately connected to one another. Diversity is the different experiences, backgrounds and skills people bring. Inclusion is about valuing those differences. Equity is acknowledging the gaps that exist in organizations related to diversity and inclusion, and being intentional about what needs to be done to decrease that gap.

Our training development platform includes various modules and systems so our associates can continuously assess how we’re doing, allowing our company to continuously improve on matters related to DEI.

Additionally, McCownGordon has a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council. Associates who are passionate about DEI look at the assessments and are able to make decisions so our organization can continue to make an impact on the DEI of our associates and communities.

With a core goal of improving the lives of our associates, DEI aligns perfectly with the culture that’s been established within our company. Diversity, equity and inclusion together create a feeling of belonging so our associates feel welcome, valued and heard. All opinions and experiences matter. Without this perspective we would not have the same trajectory of doing better and being better.

Starting in the classrooms

Our approach to DEI includes student engagement in classrooms. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, black and most other minority students are less likely to graduate with a degree. At McCownGordon, we’re proud of the fact that we attract dedicated interns who often go on to intern for additional summers with us and even join our team as associates after graduating with their degree.

Doing better, being better

A study by McKinsey found corporations which identified as more diverse and inclusive are 35% more likely to outperform competitors. Our dedication to DEI has already proven this; by embracing all experiences we build a stronger business.

Not only are we outperforming, we’re out-earning (diverse management teams lead to 19% higher revenue and companies with an equal number of men and women produce up to 41% higher revenue). If the entire workforce was equally diverse among genders, the United States GDP could increase 26% according to McKinsey

The statistics show the facts; diversity drives innovation, engagement and cash flow

Attracting the best talent

We know our drive for diversity, equity and inclusion is a major part of how we bring the best talent to our business. According to a Glassdoor survey, more than three-quarters of workers and job-seekers consider the diversity of a workplace as important when evaluating job opportunities. When it comes to the percent of workers who want inclusivity in their company and who believe diversity and inclusion offer competitive advantages, those numbers just get higher.
